Saving The Turtles~Hilton Head Island vacation rentals save the turtles, villas and beach homes. Sea Turtle Getaways

The Loggerhead Sea Turtle has long made our island and its beautiful beaches one of its favorite nesting spots along the Atlantic Coast. The Loggerhead is a threatened species and is federally protected. It is at nighttime when the female turtle returns to the same beach from where she was born and lays up to 100 eggs: carefully covering the nest with sand before returning to sea. After a two month incubation period the hatchlings arrive and begin their journey to the safety of the ocean by following the natural light of the moon. It is believed that only 1 in approximately 1000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. The Town of Hilton Head Island recognizes the need to protect the Loggerhead Sea Turtles and has enacted an ordinance requiring that all outdoor lights on oceanfront properties be turned off after 10 pm between the months of May 1st and October 31st. Sea Turtle Getaways has adopted the Loggerhead Sea Turtle as a symbol of our unique environment and will be making a donation to the South Carolina Aquarium’s “Sea Turtle Rescue Program”. The Sea Turtle Rescue Program successfully treats and releases injured and ill Sea Turtles found along the East Coast all the way from Maine to Georgia. Tours of the Sea Turtle Hospital can be arranged by contacting the South Carolina Aquarium. In place of the traditional “Booking fee” Sea Turtles Getaways will be asking for a $5.00 donation from each reservation in an effort to save these majestic creatures. Since 2004, your contributions have added up to more than $5,000.

Local couple rescues 800-pound turtle in Murrells Inlet

Local couple rescues 800-pound turtle in Murrells Inlet. You’ve probably seen a turtle, but have you seen an 800-pound turtle? A Murrells Inlet couple saw an endangered Leatherback stuck in the mud over the weekend and they said they had to help out to rescue her. A rare visitor to South Carolina, the Leatherback Turtle is quite the sight to see. Joe Chandler and Crystal Morgan can usually be found in Murrells Inlet at Muddy Waters Art Gallery or searching for logs for their next works of art. Joe’s uncle, who lives on the marsh, called him about a giant turtle in distress. Joe’s uncle decided to call the Department of Natural Resources, who then got in touch with a stranding driver with SCUTE or South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts. They needed to get to the turtle so Chandler and Morgan borrowed Joe’s uncle’s boats and took them to the mudflat where the turtle was. “The turtle was so heavy that I guess because of the suction of the mud she couldn’t move,” said Chandler. They did exactly what you’re supposed to do when you see a sea turtle in distress. Call the DNR Sea Turtle Hotline, and stay with the turtle until a DNR permitted volunteer arrives. SCUTE told everyone on scene what to do, how to do it, and Chandler and Morgan pitched in and helped. “Once we got her front flippers into the water, it became easy for us,” said Chandler. If there’s ever a turtle in distress, make sure you call the DNR Sea Turtle Hotline at 633-1639..

They are a huge danger to marine animals of all sizes. In one year volunteers collected over 100 nets, recorded 140 trapped turtles, 4 reef mantas, 3 sharks and 1 sperm whale in the Maldives. Thankfully nothing was trapped in this net and we safely removed it.

Smithsonian Earth Presents New Six-Episode Series SEA TURTLE RESCUE

At the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Care Center, wildlife heroes spend countless hours rehabilitating sea turtles back to health and safety with sheer determination and compassion. Smithsonian Earth’s new, original series, SEA TURTLE RESCUE, sheds light on each journey to recovery, from the time they are brought into the hospital to the moment they return home at sea. This new six-part, short-form series takes viewers to the front lines with the staff who are dedicated to helping preserve the endangered sea turtles, from massive loggerheads to the Kemp’s ridley, the world’s smallest and most endangered. All six episodes of SEA TURTLE RESCUE begin streaming exclusively on Tuesday, May 23 on Smithsonian Earth, available on Apple®, Roku®, Amazon, and at SmithsonianEarthTV.com. SEA TURTLE RESCUE is an emotional, intimate and sometimes heartbreaking behind-the-scenes look at one of the busiest sea turtle emergency rooms in the country. At the Sea Turtle Care Center, no job is too big or small, and SEA TURTLE RESCUE aims to shine light on these amazing creatures and their journey. In the premiere episode, viewers meet Glenn and Hopper, two Kemp’s ridley turtles, one of the rarest species of sea turtles on the planet. When a ship accidentally injures them – one severely – the Sea Turtle Care Center team must race to perform emergency surgery to save their lives. Maximum CapacityA green sea turtle nicknamed Conch has a hole in his shell with an accompanying infection, while a juvenile loggerhead turtle suffers from an encounter with a stingray in another busy summer day at the Sea Turtle Care Center. The ComebackIt’s a tale of two turtles at the Sea Turtle Care Center, as a pair of endangered Kemp’s ridley turtles come in with separate injuries. Return to the WildIt’s a big day on Folly Beach as the Sea Turtle Care Center gets ready to release two rehabilitated Kemp’s ridley turtles. Every turtle returned to the wild is a major victory for this critically endangered and embattled species. This success is due to the protected status given to beaches with a high number of turtle nesting sites, and the effort of dedicated conservationists. The Fight for SightThe Sea Turtle Care Center has come across the eighth sea turtle this year with the same, baffling symptom: cloudy vision.

6-Year-Old Boy Gives Birthday Money for Sea Turtle Rescue

When Jasper Rose turned 6 years old earlier this month, he decided he didn’t want birthday gifts. Instead, he asked friends and family for money he could donate to sea turtle rescue efforts, according to his mother. The kindergartner – fittingly from a Massachusetts city called Watertown – was able to raise more $500, his mother Ananda Rose told ABC News. She said Jasper compiled the money into one handwritten check, which he presented to the North England Aquarium’s sea turtle rescue program in Boston today – just in time to mark Earth Day. “He loves the ocean and all marine life, but he’s particularly connected with sea turtles,” Ananda, 41, said. “It’s a mystery to me as to why sea turtles, but I think there’s something about how sweet and gentle they are, just like him.” Jasper “Had an amazing time” at the aquarium today and even got to feed the aquarium’s famous 90-year-old sea turtle, Myrtle, breakfast, his mother said. The 6-year-old and his family have been aquarium members for the past three years, the aquarium said in a statement sent to ABC News. Jasper knows all of the turtles by name and their stories, the aquarium added. This past winter, Jasper got a special invitation to the aquarium’s sea turtle hospital in Quincy, Massachusetts, which is normally closed to the public, his mom said. “They brought him in to see their rescue turtles and he got to do an exam with turtle vet,” she said. The kindergartner has also written and illustrated a book about the adventures of a sea turtle named Shield, his mom said. She explained the 10-page story “Catalogs all sorts of information about environmental climate change and the growing problem of ocean pollution.” She said Jasper hopes to be a marine biologist when he grows up.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle Rescue Program: Friends of Hunting Island

Every spring on the South Carolina coast, the excitement starts to build for the season of Loggerhead Sea Turtles! Preparations are made to welcome these gentle giants, anticipating an arrival of nesting females in mid May, as we have done every season since 1993. The season on Hunting Island begins with the Friends of Hunting Island; volunteers scouring the beach at 6 am in search of turtle tracks, every morning May 1 – October 15. The incubation period for nests is 45-60 days and each nest contains 120 eggs on average. Loggerhead sea turtles have been nesting on beaches all over the world for over 110 million years. Much about their early lives is unknown, but what we do know is that it is a tough life for hatchling and juvenile Sea Turtles. So to help them on land, we give the eggs a head start and physically move any nest that might not make it through incubation due to Hunting Island’s fast erosion rate. Then we dig a replica nest, with the same dimensions of the original turtle-dug nest. We make the replica nest a little bigger because we have to be a lot more careful in moving the eggs than the mother turtle had to be in laying them! We are careful not to rotate or move the eggs too quickly, so not to disturb the developing sea turtle inside the egg. Then we cover the nest with a screen or cage to keep predators out. Our turtle patrols and nest management program were the inspiration for Friends of Hunting Island. You can join Friends to support the program or to become a turtle volunteer. You can help them by paricipating in the Adopt a Nest program. Hunting Island’s sea turtle rescue program will receive up to $15 of the $25 fee to adopt a nest. On many beaches, lights can distract and disorient hatchlings, the end result being that hatchlings go towards the road instead of the ocean! To help the Sea Turtles: Please keep all lights off the beaches of South Carolina, May – October.

Turtles

Sea turtles once roamed the oceans by the millions but over the past few centuries the demand for sea turtle meat, eggs, shell, leather and oil has greatly reduced their number. Concern for the plight of sea turtles is growing and around the world, conservationists, governmental agencies, public and private organizations, corporations, and concerned individuals are working to protect sea turtles on nesting beaches and at sea. Each summer, Florida beaches host the largest gathering of nesting sea turtles in the United States. Even though sea turtles are at home on the oceans, they are inextricably tied to the land too because the adult females must return to land to lay their eggs in a sandy beach. During nesting season, turtles produce as many as 15,000 nests a year in Palm Beach County.

Grupo Ecológico de la Costa Verde, A.C.

In the spring of 1992 the founding members of the Grupo Ecológico de la Costa Verde, A.C. organized and built the first marine nursery in San Francisco, Nayarit. Millions of years before humans arrived in North America, the marine turtle had well established its nesting habitat along the coastal waters of Mexico. The oldest inhabitants of San Francisco, Nayarit, or “San Pancho” as it is commonly called today, can still recall the nights when hundreds of nesting turtles climbed the moonlit beaches to renew the custom of perpetuating their species. Occasionally, the coastal Indians would gather food from the generous supply of eggs and turtles. The growing human population, coupled with the changing demographics of the coastal region in the past one hundred years, has dramatically altered the habitat, and thus, the reproductive cycle of the turtles.

Leatherback Turtle

Leatherback turtles are named for their shell, which is leather-like rather than hard, like other turtles. They are the largest sea turtle species and also one of the most migratory, crossing both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Pacific leatherbacks migrate from nesting beaches in the Coral Triangle all the way to the California coast to feed on the abundant jellyfish every summer and fall. Although their distribution is wide, numbers of leatherback turtles have seriously declined during the last century as a result of intense egg collection and fisheries bycatch. Globally, leatherback status according to IUCN is listed as Vulnerable, but many subpopulations are Critically Endangered.

After Rescue, Massive Sea Turtle Released Into Atlantic

Updated at 6:56 p.m. ET. A 475-pound leatherback sea turtle that was rescued from a remote beach in South Carolina was returned to the ocean Thursday, after being found stranded ashore and nursed back to health. The release ends a rare visit ashore by a leatherback, the world’s largest turtle – and one of the largest reptiles. “Despite being cold-blooded reptiles, leatherback sea turtles can generate some body heat and can endure much cooler temperatures than other sea turtle species,” Dittloff says. The staff of the aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital named the turtle Yawkey, after the area it was spotted in near Georgetown, S.C. It was transported to the aquarium in Charleston, about an hour away. From NOAA: “The leatherback is the only sea turtle that doesn’t have a hard bony shell. A leatherback’s top shell is about 1.5 inches thick and consists of leathery, oil-saturated connective tissue overlaying loosely interlocking dermal bones. Their carapace has seven longitudinal ridges and tapers to a blunt point.”

What to Know About Box Turtles as Pets

North American box turtles are mainly terrestrial turtles, although they do spend some time in shallow water. Compared to aquatic turtles such as red-eared sliders, they are more challenging and complex pets and are not the best choice for beginning turtle owners. Also keep in mind that box turtles, like other reptiles, can carry salmonella so careful hygiene is required during handling of turtles and cleaning their enclosures. More on building good outdoor housing can be found in Outdoor Pens for Box Turtles. Box turtles are omnivores, but different species and different aged turtles tend to have preferences for either more animal protein or more vegetation in their diet.

It’s World Turtle Day, so here are a bunch of adorable turtles

In 2000-the year that the summer Olympics were held in Sydney, that Florida electoral boards poured over hanging chads, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates stepped down to focus on his foundation-the American Tortoise Rescue declared May 23rd World Turtle Day. The goal, according to their official website, is to “Help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.” The obvious question is why an organization devoted to tortoises would care about turtles. Well, the answer is that turtles and tortoises are pretty similar. The biggest difference between the two is that tortoises live on land, while turtles live in water, so World Turtle Day is pretty much World Turtle And Tortoise Day.

To the Rescue: Coast Guard Crews Save Entangled Sea Turtles in Eastern Pacific Ocean

United States Coast Guard crews were cruising along the surface of the Eastern Pacific Ocean last month when they came across an “Unusual floating object.” As they crept closer, crew members aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Valiant realized that one baby and three adult sea turtles were entangled in a heaping labyrinth of garbage, abandoned fishing gear and other debris. Crew members immediately fished the sea creatures from the water, cut the animals from the knotted mess and promptly returned them to their home. The life-saving mission was a special treat for Petty Officer 3rd Class Dillon Whitaker. “One day you’re chasing drug traffickers, and the next day you get to save the life of a beautiful animal in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,” he said in a statement.

Sea Turtle Rescue / Release at Isle of Palms County Park

This past Wednesday morning, 10:00 AM at the Isle of Palms Charleston County Park, the South Carolina Aquarium along with the Sea turtle rescue team released three Sea Turtles back into the wild after they had been successfully rescued and rehabilitated: a Loggerhead; a Kemp’s Ridley; and a Green. The Loggerhead sea turtle is the largest of all hard-shell sea turtles. The eight pound juvenile Kemp’s Ridley, named “Sutton” was transferred to the SC Aquarium Sea Turtle Hospital from the New England Aquarium in January of 2012. The Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle is the smallest and most endangered of all sea turtles. The Green sea turtle is the largest sea turtle and has a lifespan of 80-100 years.

Cayman Turtle Farm

Still in operation as a farm that breeds and raises turtles in order to sell product, the Cayman Turtle Farm has also become a research centre and tourist attraction. Recently, the Cayman Turtle Centre has come under attack from animal welfare and conservation groups who claim the farm is failing to meet the welfare needs of the animals in its care and poses a threat to wild turtle conservation. Joined in support by the Sea Turtle Conservancy, the world’s oldest turtle conservation group, WSPA has launched a campaign to stop the Cayman Turtle Farm from breeding sea turtles for human consumption. In the House of Commons, Early Day Motion 612, entitled’ Cayman Turtle Farm’ calls on the UK Government to condemn the practices of producing turtle meat for consumption and help assist the farm in moving towards practices that promote the protection of turtles instead. The captive breeding programme at the Cayman Turtle Centre has long-since attracted criticism from conservation groups who claim that the centre runs the risk of introducing infectious diseases into the wild by releasing turtles that have been bred in captive conditions. However a panel of four international turtle experts that inspected the farm in December 2012 concluded that the farm had a “Positive conservation impact” because it provided turtle meat to local consumers thus alleviating poaching of the wild population, it augmented the local turtle nesting population through past turtle releases, it enabled applied research of the animals over four decades, and it increased awareness of marine turtle conservation.

Students Give the Business to Sea Turtle Rescue

Abby says she was aware of the sea turtle rescue effort on the Cape from visiting her grandmother in Brewster and that she and Alex had always wanted to get involved. As part of a project through DECA, an organization that operates an international competition among students to build career development skills, Abby and Alex made turtle necklaces which they marketed and sold with the goal of raising funds for sea turtle rescue. While Alex and Abby are not the first students to be inspired to help sea turtles, they are the first students to raise as much as they did for Wellfleet Bay. Abby and Alex got a firsthand turtle rescue experience when they visited Wellfleet Bay one November weekend last year to search for stranded turtles. “I had hardly thought about the turtles dying at all. I just assumed they all eventually could be nursed back to health. This moment made me even more passionate about selling our necklaces and donating to the turtle project.”

Turtle disaster avoided with roadkill rescue

For anyone on a long drive on a country road, one of the bleakest sights is the amount of roadkill you see punctuating the passing miles. The project focused on a road claimed to have one of the worst roadkill rates in the world. The study, Mitigating Reptile Road Mortality, examined the £1.6m, Long Point Causeway Improvement Project, that tested different ways to stop turtles and snakes becoming roadkill. “It’s quite common now for people to stop and help a turtle across the road rather than run over it,” said project co-ordinator, Rick Levick. The findings echoed another international roadkill research study published last year, which showed that crossings under roads made little difference, unless there was secure fencing.

Sea Turtle Rescue and Other Stories

Sea Turtle Rescue is an ocean story about protecting sea turtles. The first story in this collection, Sea Turtle Rescue, is available separately in Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. It is a huge challenge to keep the interest of children, and I have incorporated Sea Turtle Rescue into my classroom activities. This book, The Sea Turtle Rescue, is an affirmation of the good we as parents, teachers and mentors of young people can do, with a little knowledge and a lot of heart, to demonstrate empathy and a willingness to do the right thing. Sea Turtle Rescue is a great story that includes so many details about the lives of the children in the story that I am pretty sure I’ve met them and you will too.

EPIC SEA TURTLE RESCUE!

Angel and I were out filming wild life on the open ocean off the Los Angeles coast yesterday and thought we saw a balloon from a far distance. We always collect the many balloons we see on every ocean expedition and as we approached this balloon, we noticed it was entangled with a young loggerhead sea turtle!!!! We jumped in, pulled it on board, and cut the line/balloon material off. We took the opportunity to quickly talk about and hopefully educate people about the importance of throwing away your balloons and trash and how they affect marine life. This is the second sea turtle we have encountered in the last couple months that has been tangled in trash.

Conservation group rescue injured turtle off Liberian coast

The crew on Sea Shepherd Global vessel spotted the injured turtle floating on the ocean surface off the coast of Monrovia, Liberia on May 23 and sent dive teams out to bring it to safety. The turtle, named Stella by the crew, had dislocated its front right flipper and was suffering from trapped air underneath its shell, Sea Shepherd Global said. “These are common injuries for sea turtles, either sustained by ship-strikes or when roughly discarded from a fishing vessel,” Sea Shepherd said. The turtle was taken to a wildlife sanctuary in Monrovia, where it is recuperating. Adult male loggerhead turtles are the largest of all hard- shelled turtles, according to National Geographic, and grow to about three feet in shell length and weigh approximately 250 pounds.
