Friends of Hunting Island Sea Turtles

In cooperation with South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the volunteers of the Sea Turtle Conservation Project commit their early mornings from May through mid-October to walk the beaches of Hunting Island State Park, locating and protecting nests, relocating nests when necessary, and conducting nest inventories after the hatchlings emerge. In 2013, volunteers located and protected 125 loggerhead nests in the six zones of the Hunting Island State Park Beach. Approximately 7700 young turtles successfully hatched, assisted by our efforts. People like YOU, who commit to join the Project and Friends of Hunting Island. What will I do if I join the Project? Walk Hunting Island State Park beach with other volunteers to identify sea turtle crawls and nests. Help relocate nests laid within the intertidal zone to higher ground. Protect nests with mesh and wire cages, and identify with official signage. Monitor nests for signs of hatches and hatchling emergence. What might my assigned role include, and what would I need to do? Sea Turtle Team Members: Attend a morning training session on SCDNR and FOHI requirements and procedures during the first week of May. Report to the Visitors’ Center at 6 AM one day per week during the nesting and hatching season, May through mid-October. Walk the beaches with Team Leaders and look for turtle tracks and nests.

Mid-Atlantic Turtle and Tortoise Society

Often the turtle is an impulse purchase, and the turtle is given up when it grows too big and is too hard to care for. “We are, on occasion, asked to find homes for baby turtles, usually hatchling red-eared turtles. Maryland residents CAN own baby turtles if the owner has a DNR Captive Reptile and Amphibian Permit. The permit is $25 annually per person, and must be renewed every December until the turtle is 4” in shell length. PLEASE RESEARCH the needs of the turtle to see if a particular turtle is right for you before asking for an application. We need to know that you understand the proper care for a turtle, and the long-term commitment that comes with a turtle or tortoise. Basically, you agree to care for a turtle or tortoise in a humane manner and maintain it in accordance with the laws and ordinances in the county and state in which you reside. We need to know that you understand how to care long-term for a turtle or tortoise. If you’re looking to add a turtle or tortoise in with another turtle, please include that in the application. Once you’ve been approved, we’ll let you know, so you can prepare an enclosure for the turtle, then send a picture of the completed enclosure before picking up the turtle or arranging for shipment. Please check your state regs if you want more than one eastern box turtle or any other native turtle. Here’s a great article on indoor box turtle care, and it shows you how to make an inexpensive turtle table from a book case. We have to disinfect each enclosure after every turtle before another turtle can be fostered – and we find homes for over 100 turtles each year! – Copy paper, paper towels, clear packing tape – Betadine, hydrogen peroxide. If you need some tips on how to make caring for your turtle easier, or how to trasnport your turtle as part of a move, let us know. If you have a picture, that would help as well, as we can get the animal posted on Petfinder ASAP. If you don’t know what species or gender your turtle is, we MUST have a picture of the head and tail to help ID the turtle. How long you’ve had the turtle – How soon you have to place the turtle – How is it currently housed? Aquarium size, lighting, food? – Are there any medical problems?

Juara Turtle Project

In the afternoon on the 5th of April, JTP was informed by local’s in Kg Paya that an injured adult green sea turtle had been spotted in the same area for 3 consecutive days. JTP immediately organised rescue equipment and a boat was kindly offered by Riverview / Little Planet. Two members of staff and JTP founder John Amos set on their way to assess the situation. We arrived in Paya to pick up the local guys and they took us up the river to find the turtle. It didn’t take long to spot her, she was deep along the river , an unsuitable habitat for a sea turtle. John got out of the boat to get a closer look, what he saw was a full grown female green turtle with extensive shell damaged from a boat propeller. It took 8 people to get the large mother on to our boat meanwhile JTP staff and volunteers back at the project started preparing for her arrival. Luckily we filled Jo’s tank a few days earlier so we would have somewhere safe for her to recover. For the next few days we tried to get her to eat, we collected sea grass and fish but unfortunately she wasn’t interested. We contacted a couple of sea turtle biologists who gave us great advice about the best rehabilitation methods. The next day, the 12th was a great day here at JTPshe finally started eating! And oh boy was she hungry. JTP staff carefully climbed into the tank to see if she was just sleeping but regrettably she had passed away. Although there was no happy ending to this story for our poor injured sea turtle, we here at Juara Turtle Project appreciate that we made this magnificent creatures last few weeks of life as comfortable and free from predators as we we could. She could at least sleep easy and eat some delicious sea grass.

What Kids Can Do To Protect Sea Turtles

That is why our Billion Baby Turtles program offers students a simple and concrete way to help save baby sea turtles around the world. Plastic in the ocean is a big threat to sea turtles – they confuse plastic bags for their favorite food, they can get caught in it swimming through the ocean, and it can block them crawling on the beach. Sea Turtle Classroom ResourcesYou can watch videos about sea turtles and their migration, nesting, and more. Top 10 Sea Turtle Rescue Projects Around the World

Five of the seven species of sea turtles can be found in the Maldives with the two most common being the Hawksbill and the Green Leatherback. This government-endorsed program is concerned with three key areas of turtle conservation: the protection of turtle nests followed by assisted rearing; the rehabilitation of injured turtles; and photo identification techniques and satellite tracking. If you’re looking to help save the sea turtles and are into walking the paths of Buddhist pilgrims and swim the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, this may be the perfect sea turtle adventure for you. Sadly, sea turtles often become caught in nets from fisherman and lose their limbs. Once disabled, these turtles cannot live in the wild, so many Sri Lankan’s rescue them and are able to move them to the project site where they can be cared for and rehabilitated. Cozumel plays host to thousands of sea turtles coming ashore to nest each year. During the nights of mid-May through mid-November, on the Eastern shore of the island, two species of sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The Barbados Sea Turtle Project is based at the University of the West Indies. For over 25 yeas, they have been involved in the conservation of the endangered marine turtle species that forage around and nest on Barbados through research, education and public outreach as well as monitoring of nesting females, juveniles and hatchlings. This project focuses on protecting and replanting coral reefs but also plays a big part in sea turtle conservation. The South Carolina Sea Turtle Rescue Program focuses on helping injured sea turtles in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. When a sea turtle is found stranded or injured, SCDNR brings the animal to the Sea Turtle Hospital for treatment. Sea Turtle Foundation is involved in several research projects to improve understanding of the sea turtle life cycle. The Canadian Sea Turtle Network is collaborative sea turtle conservation initiative involving scientists, commercial fishermen, tour boat operators and coastal community members.

Sea Turtles on Cape Cod

When most people think of sea turtles, they imagine these marine reptiles enjoying the warm waters of the tropics. Visitors and residents of the Cape may not realize that each summer hundreds of these turtles make their way into Cape Cod Bay! While sea turtles don’t nest north of the Carolinas, many juvenile sea turtles spend their summers in the Bay, feeding on the plentiful crabs, jellyfish, and algae. Sea turtles are difficult to spot, though boaters may be lucky enough to see a sea turtle come up to the surface for a breath of air. The loggerhead has the largest geographic distribution of any sea turtle in the world. Adult leatherbacks can reach up to eight feet long and weigh 1,500 pounds! The hawksbill is the least common sea turtle found near Cape Cod, with only one or two records of cold-stunned individuals. Most sea turtles are ectothermic, meaning that their body temperature is regulated by the temperature of the water around them. As winter approaches, the water of Cape Cod Bay slowly decreases, and sea turtles should make their way south to warmer tropical waters. Each year since the late 1970s, some number of juvenile turtles does not make the journey in time. Trapped by the hook of the Cape, the turtles become disoriented. These cold stunned turtles are lucky: since 1979, Wellfleet Bay staff and a corps of over 250 volunteers have patrolled the beaches of Cape Cod, on the lookout for cold-stunned turtles, which are rapidly transported to the New England Aquarium for evaluation and rehabilitation. Sea turtles are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act; as such, it is illegal to harass sea turtles or transport them without a permit. For boaters, if you see a sea turtle during the summer, please report it to SeaTurtleSightings.org. If you are interested in volunteering with the sea turtle stranding rescue, or in donating supplies or funds to the program, please call us at 508-349-2615.

For President Richard Nixon, the controversy over his secret White House tape recordings began with a break-in at the Watergate Hotel. If President Donald Trump is also keeping recordings of his conversations, any controversy over those will have begun with a tweet. Senate Judiciary Committee member Dianne Feinstein says she believes former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony that President Donald Trump asked Comey to drop the Michael Flynn investigation. House and Senate investigators fired off a series of requests after former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony, seeking memos of his private discussions with President Donald Trump and any records the White House kept of their discussion – including audio recordings. Fired FBI director James Comey’s explosive testimony sparked a swift response from the White House and President Donald Trump’s legal team, who have actively disputed several claims Comey made while under oath.

An important function of uShaka Sea World is the rehabilitation of marine animals found stranded along the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Once healthy, most of the animals are returned to the sea or, if this is not possible, they are given a home at uShaka Sea World. If possible, stranded turtles are treated and nursed back to health by uShaka Sea World staff. The program provides for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within Broward County. Florida accounts for 70% of the nation’s sea turtle nesting and Southeast Florida, from the Space Coast to the Gold Coast, is the second most important nesting area in the world for loggerhead sea turtles. Broward County serves as a consistent nesting area of three specific species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle, the green sea turtle, and leatherback sea turtle. By monitoring nests and creating public awareness, the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program helps protect these fragile creatures. An associated part of this effort is the Carpenter House – Marine Environmental Education Center, which the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography manages on behalf of Broward County Parks Department to expand education and outreach about its’ sea turtles and other valuable marine resources.

Meet the turtle lady: Pocket’s very own Felice Rood

Grandma Marilyn Flynn was holding a very badly beat up red-ear slider turtle they picked up at the SPCA on Bradshaw Road. She and Rood quickly examined the shell. Rood said she thinks she may be the only legitimate turtle and tortoise rescue in Sacramento, with a rubber stamp of approval from the California Department Fish and Game while others who have turned into “Hoarders” who don’t end up adopting out any of the turtles that live there. Rood said she has always loved turtles from the time she was very little and the only pet she was allowed to have was a tiny turtle in a plastic bowl. Asked if there’s anything to add, Rood warns: “Raccoons are a terrible threat to our turtles, please be on guard, everyone.” She said they bite a turtle in the middle of the night, turn it over so it can’t go anywhere and let it bleed to death. First ever Mediterranean map of sea turtle rescue centres launched!

We are delighted to announce the launch of the “Sea Turtle Rescue Map”, a new tool that provides open-access to information on facilities that are rescuing and caring for sea turtles in the Mediterranean. The project “Database & Online Map of Sea Turtle Rescue & First Aid Centres in the Mediterranean” stemmed from a paper by Ullmann & Stachowitsch which called for ‘better information on the number and types of rescue facilities on a Mediterranean scale’. Rescue centres and first aid stations play an important role in sea turtle conservation by providing care to sea turtles that may have otherwise perished. These facilities generate better understanding of the effects of human activities on sea turtle health and are also vital in the quest to uncover more about sea turtle anatomy, biology and genetics. Through the new online Google Map one can find information about the rescue facilities that exist around the Mediterranean and can easily locate the nearest centre in case of emergency. By clicking on each facility one can view its location, contact details, and whether or not it accepts volunteers. Facilities are classified by type according to their rescue and care capacities: Sea Turtle Rescue Centres, First Aid Stations and Informal Rescue Facilities. The map is a most reliable source, as up-to-date information has been provided by each facility. The map was launched at the 41st Congress of the Mediterranean Science Commission, where Judith Ullmann presented a poster on the project to participants. We invite you to explore the map and we welcome your feedback. MEDASSET is providing open-use of this tool to relevant organisations that wish to embed the Google Map on their websites. MEDASSET would like to warmly thank J. Ullmann and M. Stachowitsch, rescue centre contact persons, MEDASSET’s volunteers and all those who contribute information and feedback for the creation of the database and map. Several members of the NC Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network thought this turtle looked a bit “Different.” A small tissue sample was collected and analyzed by Kelly Stewart, Amy Frey & Peter Dutton at the NOAA-SWFSC-Marine Turtle Genetics Program in La Jolla, California. They were able to confirm that this turtle was indeed a hybrid green-loggerhead sea turtle. They were able to tell us that its mother was a loggerhead and the father was a green turtle. This turtle, aptly named Prius, was successfully rehabilitated and released by the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on Topsail Island in 2010.

Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, Sea Turtle Rescue

Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre is a voluntary non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles. The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles. A number of these are seriously threatened by a diverse range of natural and, more significantly, human induced factors. Our rehabilitation facilities are located in Cairns – Far North Queensland, which is where many of the sick and injured turtles that we care for are found. CTRC supports the work of all organisations, individuals and agencies in their efforts to conserve sea turtles and the habitats that they live in. We work closely with a number of these groups, which includes the environmental Protection Agency and EPA National Park Rangers who are responsible for bringing the turtles to us. CTRC relies on the generous donations from supporters and volunteers, without whom we would be unable to continue this important work. Here at CTRC we are always looking for new ways to work with other parties, so that our combined efforts are not only focused but maximised for the overall benefit of sea turtle conservation. Ecotourism Australia’s national certification program recognizes operators that demonstrate sustainable tourism best practice.

Turtle Rescues NSW saving turtles from Sydney’s dams

TURTLE lovers are trawling dams across Sydney to rescue the creatures before Sydney’s housing boom arrives. With a handful of volunteers, Turtle Rescues NSW often get a call with less than 24 hours notice. With plans for the airport at Badgerys Creek, Austral expansion, Rossmore, Edmondson Park and other sites in south western and western Sydney, the men behind Turtle Rescues NSW anticipate life will get even busier. Shane Davies and Neville Parkes share a passion for turtles and they have a group of volunteers that share that love. “Those guys in big machines aren’t going to stop and rescue a turtle if they see one.” “The turtles usually brush up against your legs when you do this, so you can grab them,” Mr Parkes said. Mr Davies said dams were rife with turtles and other water animals and if they weren’t around to rescue them, the dam walls would be knocked down and the animals left to fend for themselves. “We’ve had developers tell us an ecologist had already checked. We’ve gone in afterwards. In one instance we found another 67 turtles.” “We don’t want to stop development. We don’t want to cause trouble – we just want to help the turtles.” Mr Parkes said local councils could help educate the public by putting up turtle crossing signs. “If we can tap into the younger generation to keep an eye out for turtles on the side of the road and get mum or dad to stop and put them back in water, that’s the kind of change we need.” There are more than 800 dams in the Sydney area. Turtles don’t have a connection with their babies. There are more than 30 varieties of turtle in Australia.

Sea Turtle Educational Programs

For educational institutions looking to provide their students a hands-on, feet-wet field based marine science experience we offer completely customizable programs throughout the year. Make your next field trip one that no student will forget! An internship offers students the opportunity to work hands on with endangered and threatened sea turtles. Involvement in medical procedures and the administration of some medications. Introducing the public to sea turtles and the goals of the hospital, during afternoon visiting hours. The work schedule for interns is 5 1/2 days per week, with Wednesday afternoon and Sunday free. A daily schedule always includes morning food and vitamin preparation, and feeding of all sea turtles in residence. Feeding is followed by cleaning the tanks and providing care to the individual sea turtles as needed. This might involve medical procedures, special feeding elements and medication administration. Five days per week the center is open to visitors, four hours in the afternoon. During this time interns have the opportunity to introduce our visitors to the sea turtles in residence, explain the injuries and ailments, and the background and operation of the center. Some days will also include beach survey work early in the morning, locating and identifying sea turtle tracks, and the relocation of nests when necessary. Some nights will include searching for nesting females and nest sitting in anticipation of a nest emergence, and post hatch nest data collection. Applications postmarked between December 1, 2016 and February 15, 2017 will be accepted.
